What is Flax fiber?

Flax fibre is popular in the textile industry for the production of linen fabric. It is a new and growing material in the textile industry. It is mainly grown in Western Europe. Its mechanical properties and the length of elementary fibres is feasible for raw material, which leads to an increase in demand in the textile industry.

 

It is extracted from the outer layer of the flax plant, the stem. These are the thin filaments swarmed in skinny longitudinal bundles and distributed in a circular pattern around the central portion of the stem. The holding tissue is made up of vivacious cells with a semi-permeable coating.

 

Flax fiber is soft, lustrous and more conventional than cotton fiber. It has less elasticity than cotton fibre. Like other natural fibres, it is also being considered as an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic fibers.

 

Extraction process of Flax fiber

 

The extraction of the fiber includes three stages:

 

Stage 1

Decoration. It is the process in which the cortex or the outer layer is removed.

 

Stage 2

The cortex is scraped to remove a maximum of the outer bark. The supporting tissue, parenchyma, is removed from the base layer along with the gum and pectins.


Stage 3

Conclusively, the residual cortex is washed, dried and degummed to extract the spinnable fibre.
