Spandex Yarns and Its Benefits

Spandex is the next generation synthetic polymer man-made yarn. The main property of Spandex includes soft, smooth texture and unique elasticity. Due to this, it has been the most commonly used in compression garments as a raw material. Spandex yarn can stretch upto 500% in all dimensions. Apparels made up of spandex gives extreme comfort and perfect fit. On repeatedly stretching, it does not lose its shape.

Spandex yarns are made up of numerous polymer strands. These strands have two segments- Amorphous segments (long) and Rigid segments(short). In their original state, the amorphous segments have a random molecular structure. The intermingling of the amorphous segments makes the yarns softer and Rigid segments of the polymers bond with each other to form the structural yarns. When the spandex yarns are stretched, the bonds between the amorphous segments are straightened, thereby increasing the length of the fibre and rigid sections are broken, results in bonding the segments with each other again. When the force is released, the amorphous segments recoil and the fibre returns to its relaxed state.

Types of spandex yarn:

  1. Blend spun yarn.
  2. Core spun yarn.
  3. Bare yarn.
  4. Covered yarn.

How is it made?

Spandex fibres are manufactured by four different methods-

  1. Melt Extrusion
  2. Reaction Spinning
  3. Solution Dry Spinning
  4. Solution Wet Spinning.

The initial step in all these methods is that of reacting monomers to produce a pre-polymer. Pre-polymer is then reacted further, in a variety of ways, and drawn out to produce a long fibre.

Commonly, the solution dry spinning method is used to produce over 90% of the world’s spandex fibres.

Properties of Spandex yarns

It has a breakage tenacity of 0.6 to 0.9grams/denier.

By the effect of drying, non-circular cross-sectional shapes are formed(ranging between 12-50).

The density of spandex filaments ranges from 1.15 to 1.32 g/cc. And, the linear density of filaments ranges from 0.1 to 3 tex (g/km).

The moisture of fibres ranges between 0.8 & 1.2%.

     Elastic property is extravagant.

     White in colour.

     Dull lustre.

It does not catch fire easily.

     It has low electrical conductivity.

It has low strength compared to other synthetic fibre.

It has heat resistance upto 300-degree Farenheight.

Benefits of Spandex yarns

     It is Wrinkle-free.

     It has High elasticity.

It is resistant to acid and alkaline.

     It is Anti-aging.

It feels Soft on the skin.

     It has Large elongation.

It regains the shape and length.

     It is perspiration resistant.

It does not require dry cleaning.

     It is Dyeable.

     Its colour does not fade.

Uses of Spandex yarns

It is used in the manufacturing of garments in which comfort and fit are the priorities of buyers. Hosiery, swimsuits, sportswear, cycling pants, golf jackets, disposable diapers, Surgical hose, support hose, shapewear, denim, bathing suits etc. could be some end-use products made from spandex.

It is also used in manufacturing household products such as fitted sheets, microbead pillows, latex sofa coverings, table covers etc.

Colossustex produces high-quality spandex to meet commercial requirements. We are the wholesale yarn suppliers of textile raw materials to all parts of the world. Our team is skilled and specialized in understanding the expectations of our clients.
